ICANN is thinking about banning whois!
Whois is a system which can be used to find the owner of the domain, you can see his personal data like address, email and telephone number. This could be used for spamming and other stuff that you didn’t really wanted to happen with your data. Therefore many webhosters offered whois protection where their service protects the whois of the owner, either by giving the address of the hoster or by not even showing the data. At the beginning most of these services cost money but now more and more are for free.
Now ICANN is thinking about banning whois and making the names of the domain owner invisible for the public.
If you want to find out who the domain owner of a domain is or how much details of your personal data are available for the public you can use the free whois services like whois.de or whois.ws
